SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College announced its 2018 Garnet Athletics Hall of Fame class on Wednesday, inducting five former student-athletes and a collection of teams from one of the most successful periods in the history of the men's lacrosse program.
The class, the seventh in the Hall of Fame's history, includes
Lee MacPhail Jr. '39,
Liz Gilbert Osterman '77,
Michele Fowler-Stewart '86,
Robert Ruffin Jr. '92,
Katie Tarr '02, and the
1982-85 men's lacrosse teams.
Lee MacPhail played baseball and football for the Garnet and went on to a career in Major League Baseball as an executive. He was inducted into the MLB's Hall of Fame in 1998.
Liz Gilbert Osterman excelled in field hockey and women's lacrosse and played the latter on the international stage, representing the United States in a defense of the world title in 1981.
Michele Fowler-Stewart was the very first goalie for the upstart varsity women's soccer team and also graduated as the leading scorer for the women's basketball team. Fowler scored 1,738 points just before the introduction of the 3-point line to women's basketball and still holds the record for most field goals scored with 755 in her basketball career.
Rob Ruffin starred in both football and basketball, recording school records in both sports. Ruffin racked up more than 100 tackles in each of his first three seasons on the football field and set then school records in rebounds and blocked shots in basketball.
Katie Tarr played three varsity sports for the Garnet—field hockey, women's basketball and lacrosse—and played every single game in all three of those sports save two field field hockey games at the beginning of her freshman year. Tarr was an All-Region athlete in both field hockey and lacrosse and graduated with the most lacrosse goals in Centennial Conference history with 260.
The 1982, '83, '84 and '85 men's lacrosse teams enjoyed a period of success that resulted in a 42-11 record, four conference championship appearances, three conference titles and the program's only trip to the NCAA Tournament.
