SWARTHMORE, Pa.–Making its third consecutive appearance in the Centennial Conference final, the no. 22 Swarthmore College men's tennis team (15-6) fell 5-1 to the defending champion Johns Hopkins Blue Jays on Sunday, May 8 at the Faulkner Courts.
Swarthmore trailed 2-1 after doubles with the third flight team of
John Larkin and
Blake Oetting picking up an 8-5 win over David Perez and Scott Thygesen. Larkin and Oetting finish the season with an impressive 16-1 record as a team and won their last 13 matches of the year. Sophomores
Mark Fallati and
Josh Powell battled at no. 1, but ultimately fell 8-5.
Singles action was back-and-forth, with four of the six courts going to 7-5 in the first set. Fallati and Powell both took the first at no. 1 and no. 5, respectively while Larkin and
Simon Vernier were narrowly edged out. The Blue Jay earned wins on the second, third and sixth singles courts to claim the title.
Swarthmore is eligible for an at-large bid to the NCAA team tournament and Fallati, the eighth-ranked player in the Atlantic South region, could also earn a bid to the individual singles tournament as well.
