Box Score 2 CARLISLE, Pa. – Junior Christen Boas Hayes hit a grand slam to power the Swarthmore College softball team to a 9-5 victory over Dickinson in the first game of a twinbill on Saturday, Apr. 11 at Dickinson Park. The Red Devils salvaged a split by earning a 9-1 win in the nightcap.
Swarthmore started the day off strong with a five-run first inning in the opener. After sophomore
Sara Planthaber put the Garnet on the board with an RBI single, Boas Hayes homered with the bases loaded to make it 5-0.
The Red Devils attempted to rally and most notably plated two in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 6-3, but the Garnet responded with a three-run sixth to pull away. Planthaber and Boas Hayes drove in the runs again, while Boas Hayes finished the game with a career-best six runs batted in.
Freshman
Mary Olesnavich picked up the win in the circle for Swarthmore and improved to 3-3 this season.She gave up five runs, including two earned, and nine hits while striking out three. Dickinson's Emily Rosenberg suffered the loss and fell to 8-5 after surrendering nine runs, including three earned, and 10 hits. She also struck out eight in the losing effort.
Dickinson (14-13, CC 3-9) came out with a vengeance in the nightcap, plating two runs in the first and five in the second to jump out to a 7-0 lead. Nicole Torlincasi most notably broke the game open with a three-run homer to cap the early offensive barrage.
The Garnet attempted to claw back into the game by getting a double from Planthaber followed by an RBI single from Boas Hayes in the top of the fourth. The Red Devils, however, responded in the bottom half of the frame and took a 9-1 lead on a single to center by Nicole Piet that brought home two. The game was eventually called after five due to the eight-run rule.
Nicole Clayton earned the win in the circle for Dickinson by yielding just four hits and one run. She also fanned three and issued just one walk. Freshman
Emily Bowman suffered the setback for the visitors after giving up seven runs, including three earned, and six hits in one frame of work.
Swarthmore (5-12, CC 1-8) continues Centennial Conference play when it visits Washington College for a doubleheader on Tuesday, Apr. 14 at 3 p.m.
