Alejandro Hernandez and sophomore
Liam Fitzstevens each factored into a pair of school records as the Swarthmore College men's swimming team maintained its sixth-place standing after the second day of the Centennial Conference Championships at Gettysburg College on Saturday, Feb. 21. The Garnet have now accumulated 258 points through 12 events.
Hernandez recorded an NCAA "B" cut and school record-breaking time of 57.18 seconds in the prelims of the 100-yard breaststroke before finishing third overall in the finals with a mark of 57.52. Fitzstevens accomplished the same feat, surpassing his own school record twice and placing second in the 100-yard backstroke with an NCAA "B" cut time of 51.22. Hernandez and Fitzstevens also teamed up with sophomores
Andrew Steele and
Stephen Sekula on the 200-yard medley relay that placed second in a school record-breaking time of 1:33.20.
Other notable performances in individual events were made by Sekula, Steele and freshman
CJ Cling. Sekula broke the program standard in the 200-yard freestyle twice, which including finishing fifth in the finals in 1:43.58, and Steele placed fourth in the 100-yard butterfly by touching the wall in 51.50. Cling finished the 400-yard individual medley in 4:16.11, which was good for eighth place overall.
Swarthmore, which has already set six school records through 12 events, will conclude competing at the Centennial Conference Championships tomorrow morning.
