Liam Fitzstevens swam on a record-breaking relay and set an individual record to help lead the Swarthmore College men's swimming team to a sixth place standing after the first day of the Centennial Conference Championships at Gettysburg College on Friday, February 20. The team accumulated 96 points through five events.
Fitzstevens first broke the 200 individual medley record after coming in ninth place with a time of 1:53.68. He ended the day by swimming in the 400 medley relay with freshman
Alejandro Hernandez, sophomore
Andrew Steele, and sophomore
Stephen Sekula that finished in second, smashing a school record with a time of 3:24.84. Fitzstevens, Steele, graduated senior
Stan Le, and graduated senior
John Flaherty held the previous record with a time of 3:29.94.
Other notable performances came from Steele and freshman
CJ Cling in the 50 freestyle and 200 individual medley, respectively. Steele came in eighth in 21.81, while Cling hit the wall at 1:57.99 and also finished in eighth place.
Swarthmore will continue competing in the Centennial Conference Championships tomorrow morning starting at 10 a.m.
