FULL RESULTSBALTIMORE, Md. – Despite earning a win at the third doubles spot, the Swarthmore College men's tennis team fell to #7 Johns Hopkins by a 5-1 score in the Centennial Conference championship match on Sunday, May 4. With the victory, the Blue Jays earned the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
Doubles play was competitive with two of the matches being decided by a single point. After the Blue Jays earned an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, Swarthmore seniors
Max Kaye and
Harrison Lands battled the top-ranked pair in the region before falling by a 9-8 score. Seniors
Dan Park and
Christian Carcione earned a point for the Garnet by winning at the third spot by a narrow 9-8 decision.
The Garnet were competitive in several singles matches, beginning with an opening set win by Carcione at No. 6. Erik Lim, however, rallied to defeat Carcione 4-6, 6-1 and 6-0 after Garnet junior
Irving Stone fell at No. 3 by set scores of 7-5 and 6-2. Tanner Brown, who was named Tournament MVP, defeated freshman
John Larkin to clinch the match and give the Blue Jays their eighth consecutive crown and an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
Swarthmore (12-8), which has only lost to nationally-ranked competition this spring, will wait to see if it earns an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament when the selections are announced tomorrow at 7 p.m.
