SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior
Lucy Whitacre scored a career-high five goals, including three down the stretch of regulation and one in the extra session, to help lead the Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team to a thrilling 12-11 overtime victory over Drew on Saturday, March 8 at Clothier Field. With the victory, the Garnet remained undefeated this season.
Trailing by a 9-6 score with under seven minutes left, Swarthmore rallied to net four goals in a row to seize the lead. Whitacre found the back of the cage three times in less than four minutes, which was capped by a free position attempt that made it 10-9 at the 3:22 mark. The go-ahead score came after senior
Corinne Sommi stormed in from the left side to knot the game at 9s.
Drew, however, was able to tie it up again when junior Nikki Kleiman found freshman Charlotte Brown for the equalizer with just 1:03 left. The Rangers won the ensuing draw and had the opportunity to win the game, but Garnet goalie
Connie Bowen came up with two huge saves to send the game to overtime.
After Drew (0-2) netted a go-ahead just 10 seconds into the extra frame directly after a draw that was won by junior Krysta Cento, Swarthmore's Whitacre once again had an answer and was able to fire the ball past freshman goalie Jadin James to tie the game up. Sophomore
Elizabeth Upton then netted the eventual game winner with 1:42 to play. Sophomore
Tazmin Bailiff-Curtis later caused a turnover on the defensive end that helped give possession back to the Garnet, and the hosts were able to successfully clear the ball away with under a minute left and escape with the victory.
Bowen made six saves for the third straight outing to pick up her second consecutive victory in net for Swarthmore. She also ended the day ranked first in the conference in save percentage (64.3) and second in goals against average (6.25). The Garnet held a commanding 38-25 advantage in total shots and also had a 16-11 edge in draw controls. James stopped 17 shots in goal for Drew, including several on free position attempts, in the losing effort.
Swarthmore (3-0) will trek to Hilton Head, S.C. for two games and next face Bryn Mawr in the Centennial Conference opener for both schools on Wednesday, March 12 at 1 p.m.
