RADNOR, Pa. – Senior
Corinne Sommi became the eighth player in program history to record at least 200 points in her career by netting five goals at Cabrini. The performance wasn't outdone by the homestanding Caveliers as Cabrini defeated the Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team by a 17-9 score on Thursday, March 27 at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
Emma Sipperly, a senior, scored the game's first goal at the 26:22 mark to give the Garnet an early 1-0 advantage, but the Cavaliers closed out the half on an 8-0 run to take control. Junior Melissa Scanzano notched a hat trick to lead the offensive barrage for the hosts in the opening frame.
After Cabrini (5-2) extended its lead to 10-1 in the second half, Swarthmore started to fight back. Sommi ended the Cavalier scoring streak by netting a free position goal for her 200th career point with 22:18 to play before adding another marker to make it 11-4 at 19:17 . The Garnet, however, came no closer than four and eventually had to settle for only their first non-conference loss of the season.
Cabrini had the upper hand in all facets of the game, which included having a 34-26 advantage in shots and a 37-31 edge in ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Janel Folkomer made eight saves for the Cavaliers, while junior Lacie Doubet had six points on four goals and two assists. In addition to Sommi's milestone performance, Sipperly helped pace the Garnet with a hat trick in the losing effort.
Swarthmore (6-2) has the weekend off and will resume Centennial play when it hosts McDaniel on Wednesday, March 2 at 5:30 p.m.
