COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Despite erasing a five-goal halftime deficit, the Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team was dealt a 12-10 loss by Ursinus on Saturday, March 22 at Patterson Field. The Garnet rallied to tie the game at 10-10 with just over seven minutes left before the Bears answered with two straight goals to escape with the win.
Ursinus (5-1, CC 1-0) started the scoring at the 23:41 mark when sophomore Devin Brakel found the back of the net and never trailed in the contest. After
Emma Sipperly cut the Bear lead to 3-2 with 14:21 on the clock, the hosts netted three straight in less than seven minutes to establish control. Freshman Emma Ebert shot the ball past Garnet starter
Connie Bowen to give Ursinus an 8-3 lead at recess.
The Garnet, however, stormed back and began chipping away at the deficit when senior
Corinne Sommi and sophomore
Lizzie Kolln netted back-to-back markers to make it 9-6 with 22:07 left. Sommi then completed her fifth hat trick of the season to create a 10-8 score with under 11 minutes on the clock, and Sipperly and Kolln each recorded markers just 20 seconds apart to tie the game at 10s with 7:27 left.
But Swarthmore would never be able to get over the hump, as sophomore Mary Deliberti and Ebert each tallied goals at 5:50 and 3:29, respectively, to put the hosts back ahead for good. After sophomore goalkeeper Margaret Philbin made one of her 13 saves on an
Elizabeth Upton shot with 1:23 left, the Bears successfully cleared the ball and ran out the clock to come survive and pull out the conference victory.
Ursinus had a 14-9 advantage in draw controls and a 30-27 edge in total shots. Ground balls were even at 19 apiece. Brakel and freshman Jayme Verman each notched a hat trick for the Bears, while Verman also won four draws. Senior
Caroline Murphy scooped up seven ground balls, caused four turnovers and won three draw controls to pace the Garnet.
Swarthmore (6-1, CC 1-1) returns to action when it visits Cabrini on Thursday, March 27 at 6 p.m.
