SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Seniors Corinne Sommi and Lucy Whitacre each found the back of the net four times to lift the Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team to a 14-8 victory over Widener in a 320 Challenge battle on Thursday, March 20 at Clothier Field. With the win, The Garnet will enter conference play undefeated through six games for the first time since 2006.

After Swarthmore scored a pair of goals in less than two minutes, Widener (0-5) answered with five straight to take a three-goal lead. The Pride had five different players score a goal during the stretch, which was capped by a Megan Mills tally at the 18:47 mark. Senior Amy Albano added two assists during the hot streak for the visitors.

The Garnet, however, stormed back and rattled off eight straight goals to seize control. Sophomore Elizabeth Upton started the rally with a free position goal with 16:37 on the clock and also set up a marker by classmate Antonia Violante with 2:09 to play. Sommi then found the back of the net to give the hosts a 9-5 lead at the recess.

Swarthmore (6-0) finished its eight-goal outburst when Sommi scored again on an unassisted play just 1:37 into the second half. Widener's Mackenzie Lindquist had an answer at the other end, but Whitacre followed with two straight goals to make it 12-6 with 21:21 left and put the game out of reach. The senior later found freshman Briana Narzikul at the 7:49 mark to seal the final outcome.

The Garnet had a 17-13 edge in ground balls and outshot the Pride by a narrow count of 28-25. Connie Bowen was credited with the win between the pipes, while Michelle Ammerman made eight saves in relief in the second half. Senior Caroline Murphy, Whitacre and Narzikul won three draw controls apiece, and Murphy also finished with three ground balls to go along with two caused turnovers. Widener won 14 of the 24 draw controls, which included getting four from Lindquist.

Swarthmore opens up Centennial Conference play on Saturday, March 22 when it visits Ursinus at noon.
