Senior pitcher Sarina Lowe recorded first career homerun in 8-0 game one victory over Gwynedd-Mercy
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Big hits from senior pitcher Sarina Lowe and freshman Anna Jensen lifted the Swarthmore College (4-6) softball team over Gwynedd-Mercy (0-11) 8-0 in game one on Sunday afternoon from Clothier Field. The Garnet completed the twinbill sweep with a 5-1 win in game two.

Entering the day with five career at-bats, Lowe went 2-for-2; scoring two runs and batted in three RBIs with her three-run homerun to right field in the fourth inning. From the mound, the senior left-hander pitched in all five innings, allowing three hits, walked two and struck out three batters for her first win of the season.

Playing in her first game of the season, Jensen pinch-hit for freshman Sara Planthaber in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one runner on second and the Garnet leading 7-0, she belted the ball to deep left center to bring home sophomore Lindsay Holcomb for the game-ending run.

Junior Lindsay Sellars went 2-for-3 including a two-out RBI double to left center in the second inning to bring home Lowe.

The Garnet went ahead early, scoring three runs in the first inning with RBIs from junior Chelsea Matzko and senior Rose Pitkin.  Senior Nicole Aaron led off the inning with a double to left center and advanced to third on a single from Sellars. Next at-bat, Matzko drove home both runners on a no-out double to right center. Pitkin followed with a triple to bring around Swarthmore's third run. The Griffins defense shutdown Swarthmore with a double play and fly out to end the inning.

Swarthmore kept its hitting streak alive in the second game of the doubleheader as the Garnet picked up their third straight victory with a 5-1 win over Gwynedd-Mercy in the nightcap.

Sophomore shortstop Clara Obstfeld was perfect at the plate, slugging 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs as junior catcher Emma Madarasz and sophomore outfielder Lindsey Holcomb tallied an RBI each in the win. Both Pitkin and Aaron reached 100 career hits in the game as well.

Senior pitcher Melissa O'Connor pitched a complete game, allowing one run on four hits, striking out six batters to pick up her third victory of the year.

Swarthmore wasted no time as it looked to get on the board early with a double, a walk, and a single to load up the bases. Pitkin put down a squeeze bunt, hoping to bring fellow teammate Aaron, home from third to plate the first run of the game but Gwynedd-Mercy quickly squashed the opportunity as Aaron was called out at the plate on a fielder's choice. The bases remained loaded as Obstfeld singled out towards the right side to score Sellars home from third for Swarthmore's first run of the game, before Gwynedd-Mercy managed to close out the inning on ground play towards the shortstop to prevent any further damages.

O'Connor struck out three consecutive Griffin batters in the top of the second before a strong defensive performance with back-to-back fly outs helped the squad close out the top of third as Swarthmore went to work on its turn at bat and added four additional runs. Sellars started the inning with a single towards the left side before Matzko followed suit. Pitkin pulled off a spectacular sacrifice bunt attempt to move the runners up one before a throwing error by the Griffin's catcher allowed Sellars and Matzko to advance two additional bases as Sellars rounded home, unearned, for the 2-0 score.

Gwynedd-Mercy's pitcher, Sarah Rosetti, continued to struggle as she walked the next Garnet batter before relieved by Jennifer Whalen, however the damage had already begun. With the bases loaded of Garnet runners, Obstfeld collected an RBI single through the left side before Madarasz followed suit with an RBI single as well. With the bases still loaded and the score showing 4-0, Whalen hoped to close out the inning with Holcomb at bat, but instead Holcomb drew a walk, advancing the runners once and plating the walk-off run for the 5-0 lead before the Gwynedd-Mercy managed to close out the third with a fly out towards right field to stop the bleeding.

The Griffins refused to walk away without scoring at least a run and did so in the top of the fourth on a wild pitch by
O'Connor to plate a runner from third for the lone run of the game.

After the miscues, O'Connor settled down and went to work, forcing the Griffin batters to either ground out or pop out on the play in the next three and a half innings to close out the game for her third win of the year.

Swarthmore will return to the diamond on Tuesday, March 18 in the annual 320 Challenge game played at Widener University.
