LANCASTER, Pa. – Freshman
Liam Fitzstevens set a school record in the 200-yard backstroke to help lead the Swarthmore College men's swimming team to a sixth-place finish at the Centennial Conference Championships at Franklin & Marshall's Kunkel Aquatic Center on Sunday, Feb. 23. The Garnet ended the meet with 382 points.
Fitzstevens smashed the program standard in the 200 back with an NCAA 'B' Cut twice by hitting the wall second in 1:50.53 in the finals after registering a mark of 1:51.90 in the prelims. He easily beat out the previous mark of 1:54.44 set by Andy Robbins in 1996 and ended the meet having factored into a team-best five school records.
Another notable performance was made by
John Flaherty. The senior placed third in the 200 fly with a personal-best time of 1:55.49.
Gettysburg ran away with the team crown by finishing with 757 points. Dickinson placed second with 553 points, Ursinus, Washington College, Franklin & Marshall, Swarthmore and McDaniel rounded out the team standings.
Swarthmore will now wait to see if it will send any competitors to the NCAA Championships, which will take place in Indianapolis, Ind. from March 19-22. Freshman
Andrew Steele, Flaherty and Fitzstevens are all eligible in the 100 fly, 400 IM and 200 back, respectively, after registering NCAA 'B' Cut times in those events over the weekend.
