COMPLETE RESULTS

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Freshman Andrew Steele and senior John Flaherty each recorded an NCAA 'B' Cut time and swam on a record-breaking relay as the Swarthmore College men's swimming team maintained its fifth-place standing after the second day of the Centennial Conference Championships at Franklin & Marshall's Kunkel Aquatic Center on Saturday, Feb. 22. The Garnet broke five school records in seven events and have now accumulated 276 points.

Steele notched an NCAA 'B' Cut time and school-record mark of 50.09 seconds to finish second in the 100-yard butterfly. The previous mark of 51.64, one of the oldest in the record brooks, was established by Brandon Walsh in 1997. Flaherty, meanwhile, achieved the same feat with an NCAA 'B' Cut mark of 4:07.69 in the 400 IM. The mark was also good for the runner-up position and smashed his previous school record of 4:09.95 that set last season.

The Garnet also had a pair of relays that set school records during the evening finals session. Steele teamed up with freshman Liam Fitzstevens, senior Stan Le and sophomore Samuel Tomlinson on the fourth-place 200 medley relay that touched the wall in 1:35.52, while Flaherty anchored the 800 free relay that notched a fifth-place mark of 7:04.49 and also included freshman Stephen Sekula, Fitzstevens and Tomlinson.

Rounding out the list of notable performances for the Garnet was Fitzstevens. The freshman broke the school record in the 100 back by placing fourth in 51.53, which surpassed the previous mark of 52.73 set by Sam Bullard Sisken in 2011.

Swarthmore will conclude competing at the Centennial Conference Championships tomorrow morning beginning at 10 a.m.
