Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College volleyball team (11-3, 1-0 CC) opened its Centennial Conference slate with a straight-set rout of visiting Dickinson College (4-7, 0-2 CC) on Saturday afternoon.
The Garnet was led by senior
Danielle Sullivan with her fifth double-double of the season. She earned 13 digs and four block assists on defense and a career-best 19 kills for Swarthmore's attack. Sophomore setter
Sam DuBois banked her 11th double-double - sixth consecutive - with 39 assists and 10 digs.
At the net, junior
Chastity Hopkins also had four block assists and sophomore
Anastasia White-Torruellas earned three and eight digs. Senior
Brone Lobichusky swung 12 kills and junior
Kate Amodei had two service aces.
Sullivan opened with three straight kills for the Garnet for an early 3-2 lead in the first set - she finished with a game-high seven in the opening frame. The Red Devils fought early in the opening set, tying a 2, 5, 6 and led 7-6 before back-to-back kills from Lobichusky sparked a four-point run for the Garnet. On a service from DuBois, Swarthmore earned four straight kills to lead 15-9. Swarthmore built its lead to 21-10 after a kill from Sullivan and finished out the set, 25-15, with a kill rom Lobichusky. DuBois anchored the Garnet defense with 6 digs in the first set.
The second set began much like the first with back-and-forth points for a 3-all tie after straight kills from both sides. With Amodei serving, the Garnet went on a 11-0 run, including two service aces and block assists from Hopkins and White-Torruellas. Sullivan had three of her six kills in the set during that run for a 14-3 Garnet lead. The Red Devils were unable to gather any momentum after the deficit and dropped the set 25-11.
Dickinson found a grove to start the third set with service from Jenn Morrissey, the Red Devils built a 6-2 lead. Emily Kisak earned six kills in the final set including her first four to put the visitors ahead 11-8. A kill from Lobichusky followed by service from White-Torruellas fueled the Garnet, regaining the lead at 13-11 to which Dickinson took a timeout. Dickinson continued to stay in the set, the teams tied again at 19 after a service ace from Emily Smith, but Swarthmore held on for a 25-22 set victory of Hopkins' ninth kill of the match.
Laura Silverman and Emily Kisak hoisted the Red Devils' offense with eight kills apiece, while Grace Morgan earned 11 digs in the effort.
Swarthmore returns to action Saturday, September 28 at Johns Hopkins for a 1:00 p.m. start.
