Women’s Soccer Earns Convincing 5-0 Win Over Emory & Henry to Finish Weekend Undefeated

Reba Magier and the Garnet only surrendered one goal this weekend.
Box Score Swarthmore, Pa. – Freshman Rebecca Mayeda tallied insurance goals in leading the Swarthmore women's soccer team to a convincing 5-0 triumph over Emory & Henry on Sunday, Sept. 1 at Clothier Field. With the victory, the Garnet finished the opening weekend of their 2013 campaign undefeated.

Swarthmore (2-0), which held a commanding 25-2 shot advantage, dominated from wire-to-wire to earn their second straight victory. Emma Sindelar started the offensive barrage in the eighth minute when she received a pass down the right sideline from Julia Murphy and beat goalkeeper Julia Murphy with a shot to the near post.

Melissa Trofa doubled the Garnet advantage in the 28th minute by scoring on a penalty kick before Mayeda added two more goals to give the hosts a 4-0 advantage at the break. Mayeda, a freshman who netted the golden goal in Friday's 2-1 overtime win over Goucher, potted a rebound off a shot attempt from Caroline Khanna before scoring on a penalty kick shortly before the break.

Swarthmore unleashed 12 additional shots in the second half and got its fifth marker of the match in the 71st minute. Amy DiPierro sealed the final outcome by beating the opposing keeper with a shot from the near post after taking a long pass from Amanda Bosworth.

Reba Magier earned the victory in goal for Swarthmore without having to make a save in the first half. Katie Sipiora and Caela Long combined for the shutout along with Magier by keeping the Wasps off the board in the second half. Long also made one save. Sarah Jerome of Emory & Henry (0-2) was tagged with the loss after making two saves on 13 chances.

Swarthmore, which outscored its opponents by a 7-1 count in its first two matches, will look to earn its third straight victory when it visits Widener on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.
