Mayeda’s Golden Goal Lifts Women’s Soccer to a 2-1 Overtime Win Over Goucher

Emma Sindelar tallied a goal and an assist.
Box Score Swarthmore, Pa. – Freshman Rebecca Mayeda scored her first career goal in the 98th minute to lift the Swarthmore College women's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over Goucher in the season opener for both schools on Friday, Aug. 30 at Clothier Field.

Swarthmore (1-0) broke through with the first goal of the match in the 41st minute when Emma Sindelar received a through ball from Miranda Saldivar and beat goalkeeper Juliana Harkavy with a shot to the left post. The Garnet nearly doubled their lead in the waning minutes on a free kick taken by Ellen Bachmannhuff, but her shot hit the crossbar and was successfully cleared away.

The Garnet had a lopsided 16-1 shot advantage over the Gophers in the second half, but the visitors were able to net the equalizer to eventually force overtime. Stephanie Budrock headed in a cross from Jessica Leffers to make it 1-1 in the 76th minute of action.

Swarthmore, however, was able to regroup and got the golden goal in the eighth minute of the extra session to begin the 2013 campaign on a high note. Mayeda netted her first career goal on a breakaway by finishing a pass from Sindelar.

Reba Magier made two saves on seven chances to earn the victory between the pipes for Swarthmore. Harkavy of Goucher (0-1) turned away nine of the 33 shots she faced in the losing effort.

Swarthmore will look to finish the weekend undefeated when it hosts Emory & Henry on Sunday, Sept. 31 at 1 p.m.
