Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – In a close contest from start to finish, the Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team (7-2, 2-1 CC) fell to McDaniel College (6-4, 2-1 CC) by a 10-9 score on Wednesday night in Centennial Conference action from Gill Stadium.
Sophomore Julia Jacobs tallied the game-winning goal for the Green Terror off a free position shot with 43.1 seconds remaining in regulation. McDaniel scored half its goals from free position shots – including four in the second half.
Junior Corinne Sommi led the Garnet offense with three goals and two assists in addition to two caused turnovers, ground balls and draw controls. Seniors Nicole Vanchieri and Annalise Penikis each finished with two goals and one assist.
Paige Messersmith of McDaniel led all scorers with four goals and finished with four ground balls and four draws. Five other players tallied for the Green Terror – Danielle Entrot was the only other multi-goal scorer with two.
Lily Galzerano made eight saves between the pipes for McDaniel, while junior Michelle Ammerman finished with three stops and three ground balls in the contest.
The Garnet finished with a 26-25 shot edge and picked up 13 ground balls in the effort. The Green Terror held a 12-9 advantage in draw controls.
McDaniel opened the scoring at 24:54 with Entrot's first en route to a 3-0 advantage at the halfway mark of the first frame with goals from Messersmith and Bridget Bopst. With a quick regroup, the Garnet fired off the next three goals – Sommi struck first and Penikis tallied two – to knot the score at 3-3 entering the intermission.
Swat took a 4-3 lead in the opening minute of the second half with Sommi's second off a pass from Vanchieri, but the Green Terror responded with two more from Messersmith for a 5-4 score at 26:08. Neither team would score over the next six minutes. Swarthmore stole the momentum once again with Vanchieri's two goals and sophomore Elyse Tierney's 13th goal of the season to take a 7-5 lead at the 17:20 mark.
McDaniel continued to trail until Messersmith and Anna Beaudry tallied two free position goals within 40 seconds to take a 9-8 lead with 4:45 remaining. Sommi tied the game once again just 30 seconds later before the teams remained scoreless until McDaniel's game-winner in the final minute of play.
Swarthmore will continue conference play on Saturday, April 6 traveling to No. 5 Gettysburg for a 1:00 p.m. first draw.
