SWARTHMORE, Pa. - A battle of nationally-ranked teams went right down to the wire from the Faulkner Courts, as No. 25 Mary Washington topped the No. 26 Swarthmore College men's tennis team by a score of 5-4 on Sunday afternoon.
The epic match saw four different singles' matches go three sets. With the match tied 4-4, the Eagles won it when Tyler Carey defeated junior
Anthony Collard 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 from the No. 1 spot.
Senior
Malik Mubeen won a pair of matches to lead the Garnet (9-8), taking No. 6 singles 6-4, 6-3 over Will Apperson and teaming with Collard to win at No. 2 doubles (8-3).
Swarthmore jumped in front 2-1 following doubles, with sophomore
Harrison Lands and junior
Christian Carcione joining Mubeen/Collard as winners from the No. 3 spot, topping the Eagles pair of Charles/Lunding-Johannson 8-6.
In singles, the Eagles took four of six, but in no way was it easy. Mary Washington earned three-set wins from No. 1 and No. 2 singles, while junior
Max Kaye earned a three-set win for the Garnet from No. 3 (6-4, 5-7, 6-4).
Swarthmore hosts Washington College on Wednesday in its home finale. Action is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
