Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Led by a nine-point performance from senior Annalise Penikis, the Swarthmore College women's lacrosse (10-4, 4-3) team picked up a key Centennial Confernece victory over the visiting Dickinson College Red Devils (7-7, 3-4 CC).
With the win, head coach Karen Borbee collected her 200th career victory, becoming just the second CC coach to reach the milestone.
Penikis, despite being double-teamed nearly the entire contest, put up four goals and five assists against the Red Devils. The Garnet offense was also led by junior Corinne Sommi with three goals and one assist. Freshman Lizze Kolln finished with two goals and senior Nicole Vanchieri tallied one goal and one assist in the victory.
Junior netminder Michelle Ammerman stopped eight shots in a complete game for her ninth victory this season. Penikis and Vanchieri combined for five caused turnovers and junior Emma Sipperly scooped up four ground balls for the Garnet.
Clare Manoli and Jennifer Morrissey each scored three for the Red Devils. Grace Morelli started in goal, allowing nine goals in the loss with six saves and Amanda Morse finished in net for the final 30 minutes making three saves.
With just over four minutes to play, the Red Devils - down 12-7 - fired off three tallies in under 30 seconds for the comeback, but the Garnet defense regrouped to hold onto the victory. Junior Lucy Whitacre added the final goal of the game at 2:28 to secure the all-important conference win.
Swarthmore built up a 9-5 lead heading into halftime despite a 11-4 draw control disadvantage and the shots were tied at 17.
The Red Devils started all scoring 55 seconds into the game with Morrissey's first tally, but the Garnet quickly returned fire with three straight goals for a 3-1 lead at 26:46. Dickinson eventually tied the game at three about four minutes later, but the visitors never regained the lead in the remainder of the contest.
Swarthmore hits the road on Wednesday, April 24 to visit No. 20 Washington College for a 7:00 p.m. start.
