Box Score ASTON, Pa. – Senior Annalise Penikis and junior Corinne Sommi each reached career milestones to lead the Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team (8-3) to a 16-5 victory at Neumann University (11-3) on Thursday evening.
Entering the game, Penikis needed just two to reach the 100-assist plateau – she collected her 100th assist on a goal from Sommi early in the second half. Penikis notched a season-best seven goals and four assists in the winning effort.
Sommi – second leading scorer for the Garnet – collected a hat trick in the victory, securing her 100th career goal at 28:06 in the second half from Swarthmore's 11th of the game.
Swarthmore keeper junior Michelle Ammerman finished with a season-high nine saves in 60 minutes of action.
Sophomore Elyse Tierney collected a season-high six draws and senior Beth Martin also finished with season-high five draws as the Garnet took 16 of 23 from the Knights.
Neumann fired off two goals to take an early 2-0 lead, but the Garnet scored the next nine goals – including six from Penikis – to take a 9-2 advantage into halftime.
Again, the Knights scored first to start the period with a free position goal from Jordan Hopkins at 29:04. Sommi answered with her second and third of the game followed by Penikis' fifth free position goal of the game to take a 12-3 lead with 18:42 remaining. The Garnet added four more goals – Emma Sipperly, Elyse Tierney, Julia Denney and Lucy Whitacre each tallied one to close out the 16-5 road victory.
Swarthmore returns to Centennial action on Saturday, April 13 with a trip to Franklin & Marshall. The first draw is set for 1:00 p.m.
