Women's Lacrosse Continues Hot Start With Victory Over Bryn Mawr

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team (7-1, 2-0 CC) executed an all-around offensive attack to defeat Bryn Mawr (2-6, 0-3 CC) by a 21-4 score on Thursday evening from Clothier Field in Centennial Conference action.

With the victory, the Garnet improve to 2-0 in conference play for the first time since 1997. The 7-1 start for Swarthmore is its best since the 2006 season. 

A total of 10 Garnet players tallied in the contest - including first goal of the season from sophomore Olivia Perez and first collegiate tally from freshman Antonia Violante. Senior Nicole Vanchieri led the Garnet attack with four goals, while junior Emma Sipperly, senior Annalise Penikis and freshman Lizzie Kolln each netted hat tricks.

All three keepers for Swarthmore saw playing time, combining for six saves. Freshman Christine McGinn made three stops in 30 minutes of action in the first half, while junior Michelle Ammerman and freshman Connie Bowen shared time in goal for the first game - Bowen made two stops. 

Kathleen Magner finished with three goals for the Owls and goalkeeper Grace Baelen-King came up with six saves in the effort.

The Garnet finished with a 22-12 ground ball advantage - Corinne Sommi and Penikis grabbed a team-high three as 15 total players for Swarthmore picked up at least one. Swarthmore also held a 19-8 draw control advantage, however Magner took a game-high five draws for the Owls. 

Entering the game with two goals on the season, Sipperly fired off three in the opening five minutes to spark Swarthmore's offense to an early 7-0 lead. Vanchieri - also netting a hat trick in the first half - followed by Kolln and Lucy Whitacre set the score at 10-0 with just under 20 minutes to play in the half. With a free position attempt, Magner put the Owls on the board at 13:53 before the visitors rattled off two more to finish out the frame with a 12-3 score.

Swarthmore continued its momentum into the second half, outscoring the visitors 9-1 to complete the victory. Sophomore Julia Denney picked up two goals in the half and Perez notched her first of the season off a free position shot at 16:41. Violante tallied her first collegiate goal at 12:48 for Swarthmore's 20th goal of the game. 

The Garnet will take a few days rest after playing four games in eight days - finishing 3-1 - and continue its conference schedule on Wednesday, April 3 at McDaniel. First draw is set for 7:00 p.m.
