Softball Dominates Cairn in Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College softball team (11-5) scored early and often in its double-header against Cairn University on Thursday afternoon. The Garnet took both games in the five innings, winning game one 19-3 and game two 10-1.

Senior Danielle Seltzer tallied five hits in two games with two home runs and a triple. Junior Rose Pitkin also finished the double-header with five hits and a home run while Junior Jesslyn Lammerts notched a home run in the first game. In the second contest, sophomore Laurie Sellars hit a triple to bat in a run.

In the first game pitcher Sarina Lowe, a junior, gave a spectacular complete game performance by holding Cairn scoreless for four innings. The bats backed her up with a strong showing by hitting all the way through the rotation in the first inning to go up 11-0. Seltzer hit a triple down the line early to bring in a run but had more in store. Later in the same inning she hit one out of the park to bring home three.

Later, some great base running by seniors Erin Curtis and Kate Smayda and the bats of Pitkin and Seltzer extended the lead to 19-0. In the top of the fifth inning, Cairn fought hard with Jessica Good and Kristen Hubler finally making contact and getting their team on the scoreboard. However, it was too little too late as Lowe picked up her first win of the season with three strikeouts and only one earned run.

The second game saw Cairn come out with a bit of a rhythm going from the end of the last game. Jessica Good got on base again and then Hubler knocked the ball into right field for an RBI as the Highlanders grabbed their first lead of the day. However, Garnet freshman pitcher Christen Boas Hayes quickly locked in and shut down the next three batters. Cairn would not score again in the game and their lead was short-lived. After Smayda got on base junior Nicole Aaron doubled to drive her in and two batters later Pitkin sized up a pitch and sent it over the fence for the third home run of the afternoon.

After a scoreless inning from Cairn the Garnet got back to work, scoring five more runs including Seltzer's homer. Boas Hayes pitched the complete game and allowed only three hits with four strikeouts.

Swarthmore will return to the diamond for a home double-header against conference opponent Gettysburg on Saturday, March 30 beginning at 3:00 p.m.
