Men’s Basketball Triumphs Over Gettysburg in Centennial Opener; Kober Reaches 1,000-Point Milestone

Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior Jay Kober eclipsed the 1,000-point milestone in leading the Swarthmore College men's basketball team to a 69-65 victory over Gettysburg in the Centennial Conference opener for both schools on Saturday, Nov. 23 at Tarble Pavilion.

Swarthmore (1-3, CC 1-0), which stayed ahead for nearly the duration of the contest, burst out to a 5-0 lead by getting a fastbreak layup from sophomore Seth Liebert and a 3-pointer from junior Karl Barkley. The Garnet went ahead by double figures at 16-6 on a Kober layup, but the Bullets would not go away and tied the game twice before the end of the half. Junior Joe Emerusabe canned a jumper to send the teams deadlocked at 22s heading into the recess.

Gettysburg (1-3, CC 0-1) carried its momentum into the second half and took its only lead of the game 30 seconds into the frame by getting a field goal from freshman Tanner Kirkpatrick on its first possession. The Garnet, however, responded by rattling off 10 unanswered and stayed ahead the rest of the way. A dunk by freshman Chris Bourne with six seconds remaining gave the hosts a 69-63 advantage and enough insurance to hold on for the win.

Kober, who became the 19th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone, contributed 19 points, seven rebounds and two assists for Swarthmore. Bourne netted a game-high 22 points and grabbed seven boards, while Liebert and Barkley netted 10 apiece. Liebert also finished with a game-high five assists.

Gettysburg was paced by sophomore Sango Amolo's 20-point effort. Senior Connor Poston also made a strong contribution in the loss by finishing with 13 points and five boards.

Swarthmore will look to remain undefeated in conference play when it visits Ursinus on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m.
