Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Freshman
Billy Evers and junior
Michael Superdock each found the back of the net in leading the Swarthmore College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Lebanon Valley and the ECAC South Region title on Sunday, Nov. 17 at Clothier Field.
The Garnet dominated play from start to finish, but it was Lebanon Valley (11-8-4) that was able get on the scoreboard first in the 34th minute of action. Freshman Alex Detweller headed in a pass from senior Garth Stefan shortly after a corner kick to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
Swarthmore, however, came right back and tied the match just 3:30 later on an own goal. Senior goalkeeper James Clements came to the top of the box attempting to disrupt a pass that was played down to Evers, but the ball got past the keeper and was accidentally chipped in by a Dutchman defender with Evers challenging him the entire time. Evers was credited with the goal on the play.
With just 44 seconds remaining in the half, Swarthmore was able to take a lead it would never give up on another wild play. After the Dutchmen defense failed to clear a corner kick attempted by the Garnet, sophomore
Alec McClean headed a pass from the left corner over to Superdock, and the junior defender finished with a header of his own to the right post to give the Garnet a 2-1 advantage that held for the remainder of regulation.
