Mele Johnson scored in the waning minutes of the second half to help lead the Swarthmore College women's soccer team to a 2-1 comeback victory over Muhlenberg on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Varsity Field. The Garnet scored twice in the second half to record their second Centennial Conference victory of the season.
Muhlenberg (6-7-1, CC 4-3) broke loose with the first goal of the match in the ninth minute. Stephanie Tramutola fired a shot that was saved by sophomore
Reba Magier, and CJ Graetzer potted the rebound to give the Mules a 1-0 lead that they took into the break.
Swarthmore (6-4-2, CC 2-3-2), however, came back and was able to net two goals in the second half to escape with a victory. Junior
Emma Sindelar netted the equalizer shortly before the midway point of the frame by taking a through ball from freshman
Caroline Khanna and finishing with a high shot to the upper corner of the net. Following a corner kick in the 87th minute, Johnson provided the heroics and found the back of the net by taking a loose ball at the top of the box and beating goalkeeper Amanda Wong with a shot to the right post. Senior
Megan Brock was credited with an assist on the play.
Magier picked up the victory by making seven saves on 12 opportunities for Swarthmore, which had a commanding 15-5 shot advantage in the second half. Wong of Muhlenberg suffered the loss despite turning away eight of the 21 shots she faced.
Swarthmore will play its final non-conference match of the regular season when it travels to Massachusetts to face Lasell on Saturday, Oct. 16 at noon.
