No. 13 Women’s Soccer Handles Skidmore in Season Opener

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 13 Swarthmore College women's soccer team got off on the right foot with a 1-0 victory over Skidmore College to open its 2026 campaign on Friday at Clothier Field Stadium. 

Ava Gizzie accounted for the game's lone goal, burying the game-winning tally in the 59th minute. The senior cut through the Thoroughbred defense after receiving an assist from Celia Kanellakos to set up the opportunity. Gizzie paced the team with three shots to headline a well-rounded stat sheet for the Garnet attack, which held a 19-10 shot advantage. 

The tandem of Paige Scheinberg and Sofie Aird combined for a pair of scoreless halves for the Garnet. Scheinberg made three saves in the opening stanza, while Aird logged five stops. Both keepers answered the call behind a stellar Swarthmore defense. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet defense created several opportunities for themselves behind a stifling press.  Kanellakos had a couple early looks at the net, while Jordan Vrees fired off a shot on goal in the opening minutes. 

- Scheinberg made a couple quality saves in the opening frame of her first career start. The junior headlined her afternoon with a diving stop to turn away one of Skidmore's best opportunities of the day.  

- Anwen Reed got behind the Thoroughbred defense several times, using her excellent speed to gain separation. The junior fired off a couple shots in the closing minutes of the first, but was turned away. 

- In the 59th minute, Gizzie finally broke free for the game's first and only score, netting the 32nd goal and 11th game-winner of their career. The senior broke free from the defense after an excellent set-up from Kanellakos. 

- Aird was outstanding in the second half, making a couple big saves to blank Skidmore, while the Garnet backs were also excellent in front of their keepers. Haley Lewinski helped preserve the win with a heads-up play to clear a dangerous centering pass in the final three minutes of action.
