LANCASTER, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's soccer team picked up a massive conference victory with a 1-0 decision over Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday afternoon. The Garnet defense posted their second-straight shutout, earning
Colin Crowe his second clean sheet of the season.
Joost Almekinders stepped up for the Garnet with the game's lone goal. The senior captain answered the call, burying a penalty kick in the 81st minute to lift Swarthmore past the Diplomats. Almekinders now has five goals this season, with four coming from the penalty spot. He is a perfect 4-for-4 on penalty-kick attempts.
The Garnet outplayed the Diplomats offensively with a 12-6 shot advantage. Franklin & Marshall carried an 8-2 edge on corner kicks, but were unable to capitalize on its opportunities. Crowe stopped his only save attempt of the afternoon to secure a win for his squad.
HOW IT HAPPENED

Len Yamabe produced the first shot on goal in the 22nd minute, but was turned away by the Diplomats keeper. Both teams were credited with three shots in the opening half with Yamabe recording the only attempt on goal.
- Swarthmore applied pressure to the home team, registering the first six shots of the second half. Kaden Cho and Yamabe put shots on goal, while Almekinders sent a header wide of the net.
- Crowe successfully made his only save attempt with a stop in the 70th minute. The Diplomats manufactured very little offense in the second half, recording just three shots against a stellar Garnet defense.
- Almekinders rocketed his penalty attempt past the Diplomats keeper to win the game for the Garnet. Yamabe earned the penalty kick after being tripped by the goalkeeper while breaking into open space on an excellent ball from Joseph Marinello V.
