SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Celia Kanellakos scored the game-winning goal in the 79
th minute and
Sofie Aird made a career-high 11 saves as the Swarthmore College women's soccer team defeated No. 17 Johns Hopkins University, 1-0, in the Centennial Conference opener on Saturday.
The Blue Jays had the advantage in shots (15-8) and shots on goal (11-4) but the Garnet found a way to knock off their conference rival.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams had a chance to seize the lead early on, as Hopkins rang a shot off the crossbar at the eight-minute mark. Less than three minutes later,
Charlotte Carleton put her attempt off the left post and the game remained scoreless. Aird was busy in the opening half, making five saves to keep the Blue Jays off the board.
- In the second half, Kanellakos had an opportunity for the lead in the 64
th minute but her shot hit the crossbar. However, the junior redeemed herself in the 79
th minute.
Aminah Evans sent a long service from the back into the attacking end. Kanellakos won the race to the ball and cut to her right between two defenders into open space. She then fired a shot from 12 yards into the upper right corner to put Swarthmore in front.
- Aird stopped six more shots in the second half, including four in the final five minutes of play, to pick up her third career shutout.
