SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to visiting Johns Hopkins University in the Centennial Conference opener on Saturday.
The two sides were nearly even in shots with the Garnet holding a 12-11 edge. The Blue Jays struck first in the opening half and maintained the advantage into halftime.
Joost Almekinders tied it up for Swarthmore early in the second but Hopkins scored the go-ahead goal in the 61
st minute and made it stand.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Jays went in front in the 17
th minute with a blast from the top of the box. Hopkins outshot the Garnet, 5-2, in the half but Swarthmore had a quality chance in the 34
th minute on a corner kick.
Ned Spaniel put a header on goal in tight and the goalkeeper had to leap and punch it away before the ball found the top half of the net.
- Almekinders scored the equalizer less than five minutes into the second half, beating the charging goalkeeper to a loose ball and firing it into the back of the cage.
Ben Fair nearly put the home squad in front in the 58
th minute but just missed the upper right corner on an offering.
- The Blue Jays regained the advantage in the 61
st minute, putting in a seeing-eye shot along the ground from the top of the box. The Garnet put on the pressure with seven shots the rest of the way but were unable to bring the score level.
