MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Swarthmore College volleyball team fell at No. 14 Wesleyan University by a 3-0 score on Friday night.
The Garnet battled against the nationally-ranked Cardinals but were unable to pull off the upset.
Isabel Adam led the Swarthmore attack with 10 kills while adding nine digs.
Maya Sheridan and
Melissa Eyer tallied 12 and 11 digs apiece with Sheridan also recording a team-high 11 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet started strong, getting out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set. However, Wesleyan bounced back five of the next six points to gain a 6-5 edge. Swarthmore responded with a 5-0 run to go in front once more, 10-6. The momentum shifted back to the Cardinals with six unanswered points. The teams were later even at 15 when Wesleyan took over for good with a 6-2 run. The Cardinals went on to take the set 25-20.
- The Garnet built an early lead once again in the second, going ahead 5-2. Swarthmore was up 6-4 when Wesleyan rallied for six of the next eight points and a 10-8 advantage. The Cardinals were in front 15-13 when the Garnet posted an 8-3 stretch to take the upper hand, 21-18. However, Wesleyan fought back with four consecutive points to get back in it. The teams were even at 23 apiece before the Cardinals notched a kill then benefitted from a Swarthmore error to claim the set 25-23.
- In the third, the Garnet clung to a 5-4 edge when Wesleyan took control, producing a 10-2 surge for a 14-7 cushion. Swarthmore was able to cut the deficit to four (16-12) but the Cardinals pulled away with a 9-4 run to finish off the match, 25-16.
