BALTIMORE – In the third meeting between the squads this season, the No. 8 Swarthmore College men's tennis team broke through and took down No. 7 Johns Hopkins University in a thrilling 4-3 decision on Sunday.
The two sides went back and forth throughout the evening and were even at 3-3 with one match remaining.
Dylan Hayes Gilbert was the hero for the Garnet, pulling out a three-set victory to give Swarthmore the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Jays earned back-to-back victories at third (7-5) and first (6-4) doubles to take a 1-0 lead.

Andres Fente salvaged a win for the Garnet, coming away with a 7-6 tiebreak triumph at the second spot.
- Fente brought Swarthmore level with a 6-3, 6-2 victory to start singles play.
Max Lindstrom then gave the Garnet the edge with a 6-3, 6-4 success at the second flight.
- Hopkins bounced back with a 6-1, 7-6 win at third singles to tie the match then the Blue Jays went in front with a 6-3, 7-5 decision at the fourth position.

Michael Melnikov kept Swarthmore alive with a come-from-behind win at first singles, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. The match came down to sixth singles with Gilbert on the court. He dropped the opening set, 2-6, but rallied to claim a 7-6 tiebreak victory and force a decisive frame. Gilbert carried the momentum into the final set and pulled away for a 6-2 triumph.

The Garnet (18-6) begin their Centennial Conference Tournament run on Friday with a home semifinal match against Washington College.
