Men’s Lacrosse Overtakes F&M in Playoff-Clinching Win, Almgren Breaks Goals Record

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team erupted for seven fourth-quarter goals to win 15-10 in a vital conference matchup at Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday afternoon. With today's victory, the Garnet clinched a spot in the Centennial Conference Tournament. 

Clay Almgren led the way for the Garnet, netting seven goals to spark the Swarthmore attack. The senior ended the afternoon with 136 career goals, passing Von Mabbs '24 as the program's all-time leader in goals scored. 

With Swarthmore trailing by two goals at the 12:13 mark, Jack McHenry won three consecutive faceoffs to help kickstart a Swarthmore comeback. The Garnet closed the game with seven-unanswered scores to steal a much-needed victory. Almgren scored four of the final seven goals, while Ben Zabierek, Dylan Ah Now and Andrew Stodden added to the fourth-quarter comeback. 

McHenry went 9-for-9 in fourth period faceoffs, while Swarthmore limited the Diplomats to just three shots in the period. Drew Tyson was excellent between the pipes, making two fourth quarter saves and 15 total for the game. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first period was a back-and-forth affair with Swarthmore twice responding to one-goal deficits to lead 5-4. Almgren led the way with two goals, while Ryder Maston, Rex Mabbs and Owen George all chipped home goals. 

- The Diplomats scored three of five second-period goals to even the score at 7-7. Almgren added one score to net his third of the half, while Mabbs connected on his second score. Swarthmore limited F&M to a single goal on three power play attempts.

- A cagy third period saw the home team score two of the quarter's three goals for a 9-8 Diplomat advantage. Tyson came up big with five saves in the stanza, while Mabbs provided the lone Garnet goal. 

- Swarthmore owned the fourth period with a 7-1 advantage on the scoreboard to secure a vital conference victory. Facing a two goal deficit, the Garnet accounted for the final seven goals. Almgren scored four times during the stretch, while Zabierek, Ah Now and Stodden helped fuel the rally. Zabierek got the run started with the first of seven-straight goals.
