GILBERT, Ariz. – The Swarthmore College women's tennis team climbed five spots to No. 16 in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Ranking.
The Garnet defeated No. 26 University of Mary Washington, 4-3, on Saturday. Swarthmore was trailing 3-2 with a pair of matches remaining, but swept the remaining contests to steal a victory.
Uma Pogrebivsky and
Kathleen Shiffer played heroes with wins at sixth and fourth singles respectively. Shiffer was responsible for clinching duties, handling her opponent in a pair of tiebreakers. She was also a multi-match winner, teaming with
Paola Almeda for a second doubles victory. Shiffer was named the Centennial Conference Player of the Week.
The Garnet travel to Bryn Mawr College on Wednesday.
