Men's Lacrosse Falls in Overtime at Washington

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team suffered a tough 12-11 overtime loss at Washington College in Centennial Conference action on Wednesday night.
 
The teams traded goals throughout the first quarter and were even at five after 15 minutes of play. The Garnet opened the second stanza with three straight tallies to go ahead 8-5. The Shoremen scored in the final minute of the period to trail 8-6 at the intermission. After Swarthmore scored to open the third, Washington rallied for five unanswered to take an 11-9 advantage midway through the fourth. The Garnet were able to tie it up and force the extra session but the Shoremen netted the game-winner at the 3:10 mark.
 
Clay Almgren paced the Garnet with five points on two goals and three assists. Ryder Maston scored three goals while Owen George recorded one goal and two assists. Nolan Ohrman found the back of the net twice. Jack McHenry collected 15 ground balls to set a new single-season program record. He currently has 142 on the year, surpassing Alex DeShields's mark of 134 from 1998. Drew Tyson turned aside 15 shots in the Swarthmore cage in a valiant effort.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Shoremen registered the first goal of the contest just 58 seconds in. The teams proceeded to alternate tallies for the entirety of the first quarter. Maston beat the goalkeeper twice for the Garnet with Almgren and Ohrman each potting one goal. Ben Zabierek beat the clock for the final marker of the period, scoring with just three seconds to play to bring Swarthmore level at five.
 
- Swarthmore carried the momentum into the second, as Ohrman, Maston, and Dylan Ah Now produced three straight goals to put the Garnet in front 8-5. Washington ended its drought with 59 seconds remaining and the score was 8-6 at halftime.
 
- Almgren netted the opening goal of the third to restore a three-goal Swarthmore advantage (9-6). However, the Shoremen then went on a 5-0 run to go ahead 11-9 with 6:32 left in the fourth quarter. The Garnet were held off the scoreboard for 26:34 of game time before George snapped the scoreless streak with 2:47 to play. Rex Mabbs then put in the tying goal for Swarthmore with 1:11 to go. The Garnet won the ensuing face-off and had a chance to end the game in regulation but put two shots wide of the cage.
 
- Washington gained possession on a face-off violation to start overtime and potted the game-winner 50 seconds later.
