CARLISLE, Pa. – The No. 25 Swarthmore College baseball team split its conference-opening doubleheader at Dickinson College on Sunday. The Red Devils walked it off in game one, 8-7 in 10 innings, before the Garnet bounced back to take the nightcap, 9-4.
Andrew Firko and
Deven Peterson both went 3-for-6 at the plate. Firko drove in two runs and scored twice to go with a walk and a stolen base. Peterson smacked a pair of doubles and tallied one RBI, one walk, and four runs.
Nathaniel Kittredge recorded four hits, a walk, one RBI, and four runs.
DICKINSON 8, SWARTHMORE 7 (10 INN.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore opened the scoring with a five-spot in the second. The first five hitters reached with Firko driving in a run with a single and
Wilson Henze drawing a bases-loaded walk.
Aidan Sullivan laced a two-run double to right and
Zac Kahn closed the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
- Dickinson got on the board in the bottom of the second with an RBI groundout. The Garnet increased their advantage in the third with two runs. Peterson led off and was hit by a pitch for the second straight frame and later scored on a sac fly by
Alessandro Propper-Bowring. Kittredge reached on an error and came home on a sacrifice bunt by Firko to give the Garnet a 7-1 lead. The Red Devils got their second run of the day on a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning.
- Dickinson closed the gap to four (7-3) with a two-out RBI single in the sixth. The Red Devils made it 7-4 on an RBI single in the seventh. The home team continued to chip away in the eighth, scoring on another two-out single to cut the deficit to two (7-5). Dickinson completed its methodical rally in the ninth, crushing a two-run homer with two outs to tie the game.
- The contest went into extra innings and Peterson led off the 10
th with a double for Swarthmore. However, the Garnet were unable to score the go-ahead run. The Red Devils drew back-to-back walks with one out in the bottom of the 10
th. After the runners advanced on a pair of stolen bases, another walk loaded them up and the winning run came in on a wild pitch.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore struck first in the opening frame with Peterson scoring on a two-out triple by
Brad Johnston. Dickinson responded quickly in the bottom of the inning, scoring twice on an error and a hit by pitch.
- The Garnet answered right back with a two-run second to regain the lead. Propper-Bowring doubled in Kittredge before later scoring on a fielder's choice. Swarthmore held the 3-2 edge until the fifth when the Red Devils evened it up on a sacrifice fly.
- Propper-Bowring led off the Garnet half of the seventh with a double down the right field line. Firko followed with a single to put runners on the corners. After Firko stole second,
Noam AuYeung hit a go-ahead single to right and Swarthmore was back in front. Firko later touched the plate on a Peterson sac fly to make the score 5-3.
- The Garnet added to their lead in the eighth, scoring on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to make it 7-3. Dickinson produced its final run on a single in the bottom of the inning. Swarthmore tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the ninth as Kittredge worked a bases-loaded walk and Sullivan scampered home on a wild pitch.
