No. 9 Men’s Tennis Falls to No. 15 WashU, Bounces Back at Mary Hardin-Baylor

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, TX - The No. 9 Swarthmore College men's tennis team split the day with a 4-3 loss to No. 15 Washington University in St. Louis, and a 5-2 victory at the University Mary Hardin-Baylor on Wednesday. 

Mike Melnikov led the effort against WashU with a pair of victories at top singles and doubles, while Rishi Verma and Seth Sadikov picked up impressive wins at singles. Andres Fente and Cameron Samek were both two-time winners against Mary Hardin-Baylor.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Melnikov/ Utham Koduri grinded out a 7-5 victory at top doubles. However, the Bears answered with close wins at second doubles (6-4) and third doubles (6-3) to secure a point.

- Melnikov picked up his second win of the afternoon with a top singles victory. The senior overtook his opponent with a tight 7-5 decision in the opening set, before wrapping things up with a 6-3 win in the second set. 

- Verma picked up another victory on the road trip, winning at No. 4 singles in two sets. The junior took the first set 6-3, and then cruised to a 6-1 triumph in set two. 

- Sadikov earned another victory at No. 6 singles. The sophomore started off the match with a 6-3 victory, before battling for a 7-5 win in the second set. 

- Max Lindstrom dropped a tightly-contested showdown at second singles. After claiming the opening set with a 6-4 win, the senior dropped the following two sets with a pair of 6-4 decisions.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Garnet swept doubles action with a trio of 6-4 decisions. Kai Chen/ Fente won at top doubles, while Aadhi Raja/ Nicholas Choo and Fate MacAlasdair/ Samek triumphed at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.

- Fente battled for a victory at top singles. The senior won the opening set 7-6, before sealing victory with a 6-4 decision in the second set. 

- Dylan Hayes Gilbert picked up the win at second singles, taking care of his opponent in two sets. The sophomore grinded out a 7-5 win in the first set, while cruising to a 6-0 decision to claim the match. 

- Aamish Pal earned a hard-fought victory at No. 4 singles. After dropping the opening set 7-5, the senior countered with a 7-5 victory to stay alive. He then handled his opponent with a 10-6 win in the tiebreaker. 

- Samek picked up his second victory with a triumph at No. 5 singles. The rookie won his match in two sets with a 6-2 and 6-3 outcome.
