Men's Lacrosse Comes Up Short Against No. 6 York (PA) in Epic Clash

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team suffered a heartbreaking loss against No. 6 York College of Pennsylvania, 13-12 in double overtime, in a weather-lengthened contest on Wednesday night.
 
The Garnet scored the first two goals of the game and maintained the advantage into halftime. Trailing 8-7, the Spartans then rallied for five straight goals, including a 4-0 edge in the third quarter, to take over and led 12-8 early in the fourth. Swarthmore came back with two consecutive tallies to get within two before the contest went into a lengthy lightning delay. When the game resumed, the Garnet completed their rally with two more goals to force overtime. However, York netted the game-winner with 28 seconds left in the second extra session.
 
Clay Almgren led the Garnet with four points on three goals and one assist. Nolan Ohrman potted three goals while Rex Mabbs and Owen George each notched two goals and one assist. Drew Tyson made a career-high 21 saves in the cage.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore got out to a 2-0 lead with 10:07 left in the opening quarter on goals by Mabbs and Almgren. The teams alternated goals until it was 4-2 late in the period. The Spartans then scored with just five seconds remaining on the clock to get within one entering the second.
 
- The Garnet padded their lead with back-to-back goals by George and Andrew Stodden at 11:27 and 10:42 respectively. The squads traded tallies again and Swarthmore held an 8-5 advantage with 3:08 to go before halftime. York potted the last two goals of the frame just eight seconds apart to trail by one (8-7) at the break.
 
- The Spartans dominated the third to take their first lead of the contest. York outscored the Garnet 4-0 in the period as its goalkeeper made four saves to keep Swarthmore off the board. The Spartans made it five unanswered with a marker at the 14:15 mark of the fourth quarter and led 12-8. Ohrman ended the Garnet drought with 12:49 on the clock and Ben Zabierek found the back of the net at 11:22 to bring Swarthmore within two (12-10). However, the game then entered a one hour and fourty-four-minute lightning delay.
 
- When the teams returned to the field, the Garnet continued their momentum, holding York scoreless for the remainder of the fourth quarter. George netted a goal at 9:11 to get his squad within one then Mabbs tied it up with 4:31 to go. Tyson made five saves in the period, including two in the final 30 seconds to take the thriller into overtime.
 
- Both teams had a chance to win it in the opening four minutes of overtime but came up empty. Each goalkeeper made one save to keep their squad in it. Swarthmore had the first possession of the second extra session but two shots were stopped by the Spartans goalie. Tyson came up with a big save at the other end but York had the ball again in the final minute. The visitors converted with 28 seconds on the clock to pull out the victory.
