No. 21 Women's Tennis Opens Spring Break with Two Matches

SAN ANTONIO – The No. 21 Swarthmore College women's tennis team split a pair of matches to begin its spring break trip to Texas on Tuesday. The Garnet defeated No. 40 Skidmore College, 5-2, before suffering a narrow 4-3 defeat to Division II St. Mary's University. Ella Strickler led the Garnet with three wins on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore swept doubles play for a 1-0 lead. Riya Rao and Strickler earned a 6-0 win at the second spot, Paola Almeda and Kathleen Shiffer grabbed a 6-2 victory at the third position, and Erin Li and Lola Diaz came out on top 6-4 at first doubles.
 
- The Thoroughbreds scored their points with wins over Li, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), at first singles and Diaz, 6-0, 6-3, at second singles. Lisa Messier posted a 6-3, 6-3 triumph for the Garnet at the third flight.
 
- Swarthmore dominated fourth through sixth singles, dropping just two games in those bouts to take the victory. Shiffer won 6-0, 6-1 at the fourth spot, Strickler shut out her opponent at fifth singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Hannah Kideckel rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 success at the sixth position.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Rattlers opened the match with a 6-2 win over Veronica Komorek and Kideckel at second doubles. However, the Garnet bounced back with two straight victories to claim the doubles point. Diaz and Li came away with a 7-5 triumph at the top spot while Maya Morandat Stilling and Uma Pogrebivsky also earned a 7-5 decision at the third flight.
 
- Strickler led 6-4, 4-1 before her opponent was forced to retire at third singles. St. Mary's got on the board with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Shiffer at the second position. The home team then tied it up with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph versus Komorek at the fourth spot.
 
- The Rattlers claimed the match with back-to-back victories at fifth and first singles. They came out on top 6-3, 6-2 versus Pogrebivsky and 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 against Diaz. Rao closed out the match with a comeback 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) win at sixth singles.

Swarthmore (3-3) concludes its stay on Thursday when they visit No. 12 Trinity University.
