Men’s Basketball Outlasts Haverford Behind Late Second-Half Surge

SWARTHMORE, Pa.  - The Swarthmore College men's basketball team grinded out a hard-fought win over Haverford College, 63-53, on Wednesday evening. The Garnet trailed for the majority of the second half before closing the final five minutes on a 19-4 run.

Eddie Paquette had the hot hand for the squad, tallying 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Brady Kageyama added 12 points on a perfect shooting night as the only other Swarthmore player in double figures.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a back-and-forth start to the opening half, Matthew Maloney and Paquette each knocked down threes to give the Garnet a four-point advantage with 12:01 left.

- Kageyama caught fire from mid-range, knocking down a pair of foul-line jumpers to keep pace with Haverford's offense. The junior then connected on a couple free throws to increase the team's lead to five points, 21-16.

- Haverford regained the lead with a 6-0 run, pulling ahead 22-21 at the 4:20 mark. The Fords added another bucket to increase their advantage to three until Paquette buried a corner triple after grabbing an offensive rebound.

- The Fords ended the half strong, heading into the locker room on a 3-0 run in the final two minutes. Haverford led 27-24 at intermission despite playing from behind for the majority of the half.

- Haverford carried momentum into the second half with six-straight points to start the second. After the Fords built their lead to nine points, the Garnet punched back with five-straight. Paquette scored three points during the swing, while Kageyama closed the rally with a fastbreak layup. However, the Fords responded out of their own timeout with a timely three-pointer, making it 36-30.

- Swarthmore's defensive pressure helped flip momentum as the Garnet offense erased its deficit. Maloney helped turn things around with a three-pointer, which led to a 9-3 Swarthmore run. Devin Burger then tied the game with a layup to draw even at 41-41 with 10:19 left.

- The pendulum flipped back in the favor of Haverford, who put together a 6-1 run to build a five-point cushion. Coming out of a timeout, the Garnet struck quickly with five points to even the score. Paquette sparked the run with a three-pointer, while Cal Hanson followed with a game-tying bucket. Paquette then knocked down a pair of free throws to take the team's first lead of the half, 51-49.

- Burger helped seal the victory with a layup before Zander Jimenez added a pair of free throws, making it 59-53 with 48 seconds left. Burger then put the finishing touches on the win with a fastbreak slam.
