READING, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team earned its first win of the season on Wednesday with a dominant 15-1 victory at Alvernia University.
The Garnet outscored the Golden Wolves, 7-0, in the opening quarter. Swarthmore conceded just two shots during the period to set the tone for the rout.
Claire Long led the way with four goals while
Carly Rodrigues-Reilly also recorded four points on two goals and two assists.
Annabel Stifler scored three times and
Aubree Daugherty registered three assists.
Kela Watts tallied one goal and two assists to finish with three points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet netted the first 10 goals of the contest to build a commanding lead with 8:47 left in the first half. Long scored all four of her goals during the run with
Kate Fox and Stifler adding two apiece. Alvernia broke its scoring drought at the 6:49 mark before Rodrigues-Reilly closed the period with back-to-back tallies to give her squad a 12-1 lead at the half. Swarthmore controlled the shots in the opening 30 minutes, 31-5, and won 10 of the 14 draws.
- The Garnet padded their advantage in the third quarter on goals by Stifler,
Zoe Crawford, and
Elle Pedaci. The Golden Wolves managed 12 shots over the final two stanzas but
Brooke Carrier,
Elizabeth Walsh, and
Sadie Steffens combined to shut out the home team in the second half.
