Baseball Splits with Pfeiffer to Conclude D3 Showcase

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – The Swarthmore College baseball team split a doubleheader versus Pfeiffer University late Saturday night. The Garnet dropped the opener 14-11 before coming back to take game two 5-2.
 
Zac Kahn went 5-for-10 with a double, two RBI, and two runs over the two contests. Nathaniel Kittridge was 3-for-7 with two walks and three RBI. Deven Peterson totaled two hits in five at bats, a home run, three walks, three RBI, and four runs. Steven Jungers earned the win on the mound for Swarthmore, tossing three scoreless innings in relief and recording all nine outs via strikeout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Falcons struck for a run in the top of the first to take an early lead. The Garnet promptly answered with two in the bottom of the inning. Evan Hawkes scored on a passed ball and Brad Johnston scampered home on a wild pitch.
 
- Leor Kedar upped the Garnet advantage to two with a homer in the second, making it 3-1. Pfeiffer got one back in the third but Swarthmore responded with a pair in the bottom half to go ahead 5-2. Peterson sent the first pitch he faced over the wall in left for a two-run shot.
 
- The Garnet created separation with a five-run fourth. Hawkes and Kahn both hit an RBI single, Kittredge knocked in two with a base hit, and Peterson came home on a passed ball. The Falcons tallied three in the fifth to get within five before Kahn plated another run in the bottom half to give Swarthmore an 11-5 lead.
 
- Pfeiffer stunned Swarthmore with three runs in the seventh and six in the eighth to rally to a 14-11 advantage. The Garnet brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth but did not score and they went down in order in the ninth.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams were scoreless through the first three innings before Kittredge put Swarthmore on the board with an RBI single in the fourth. The Falcons replied with two in the bottom of the frame on a single and a sacrifice fly to take a 2-1 lead. Peterson brought the Garnet level at two with a two-out RBI single up the middle in the fifth.
 
- Jungers came in with two on and no outs in the bottom of the fifth. He whiffed three straight batters to strand the two runners and keep the game tied. Jackson Clemens led off the sixth with a double before Alessandro Propper-Bowring gave Swarthmore the upper hand with a single that plated Clemens. Jungers then struck out the side again in the sixth around a two-out single.
 
- The Garnet pulled away in the seventh as Johnston hit his second homer of the weekend and Peterson scored on a sacrifice bunt to make the score 5-2. The Falcons put two men on in the bottom of the seventh but Jungers tallied three strikeouts again to close out the victory.
