No. 22 Women’s Tennis Drops Spring Opener to D-I Towson

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 22 Swarthmore College women's tennis team opened its spring season with a competitive loss against Division-I Towson University, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon.

Lola Diaz picked up an impressive victory in No. 2 singles to headline a hard-fought matchup. The senior handled her challenger in two sets after triumphing on a 9-7 tiebreaker. Hannah Kideckel was also victorious in No. 6 singles, earning an 8-5 decision. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES

- The Tigers swept doubles action to begin the afternoon with a 1-0 advantage. Diaz/ Erin Li dropped a 6-1 decision in top doubles, while Kathleen Shiffer/ Paola Almeda fell 6-2 at No. 2 action. 

- Ella Strickler/ Riya Rao dropped a competitive slate in No. 3 doubles. The Swarthmore duo put up a valiant fight, but suffered a 6-4 defeat.

SINGLES
- Diaz had the best performance of the afternoon, battling to a two-set win at No. 2 singles. The senior grinded to a pair of victories with a 7-5, 7-6 decision. Diaz outlasted her challenger with a 9-7 victory in an intense second-set tiebreaker. 

- Li won a handful of games against her top singles challenger, but ended up falling in two sets. The sophomore dropped the opening set 6-3, before succumbing to a 6-1 loss in the second. 

- Lisa Messier narrowly dropped a No. 3 singles battle, falling in three sets. The senior got out to an excellent start with a 6-3 triumph in the opening set. However, Messier dropped the following set 6-4, and then fell 10-6 in the finale. 

- Shiffer won a few games at No. 4 singles, but fell 6-2, 6-1. Almeda then put up a tough fight in No. 5 action before falling 6-4, 7-5 in a pair of intense sets. 

- Kideckel added another win for the Garnet with a victory at No. 6 singles. The rookie won 8-5 to open her spring campaign. 

UP NEXT
The Garnet (0-1) will be put to the test at next week's Groundhog Palooza, squaring off against nationally-ranked powerhouses Washington & Lee, Christopher Newport University and Case Western Reserve University.
