No. 17 Women’s Soccer Earns Draw at McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, MD - The No. 17 Swarthmore College women's soccer team fought its way to a 1-1 draw at McDaniel College on Saturday afternoon. After surrendering an early goal in the opening minutes, the Garnet gutted out a hard-fought draw to remain unbeaten in the Centennial Conference. 

Ava Gizzie scored the equalizing goal in the 70th minute to even the score against the Green Terror. The senior tallied their 37th career goal, and their first career penalty-kick goal. Gizzie moved into fourth all-time in program history with 83 career points. They are one goal away from entering a tie for third all-time. 

Sofie Aird was outstanding between the posts with six saves. The senior was huge down the stretch, making several late stops to earn her team a crucial point in the conference standings.  

HOW IT HAPPENED
- McDaniel struck early with a goal in the fourth minute, ending a streak of four consecutive Swarthmore shutouts and marking just the second goal allowed by Aird this season.

- Swarthmore quickly responded with a quality scoring opportunity of its own. Charlotte Carleton carried the ball deep into the box and sent an excellent centering pass to a teammate, but the Garnet narrowly missed connecting on the chance.

- Aird made a couple saves midway through the first half to keep her team within striking distance. She then stepped up and made another stop in the 37th minute, totaling three saves in the half.  

- McDaniel robbed the Garnet of a goal in the 68th minute. With the goalie out of position, Izzy Tolosa fired a loose ball on net, but had her shot blocked by a heads-up stop from a Green Terror defender. 

- In the 71st minute, Gizzie put the Garnet on the board with a penalty kick to level the score. The senior standout drew the attempt after they were tackled inside the box and then capitalized on the opportunity with an equalizing goal. The score marked Gizzie's sixth of the season and first penalty-kick goal of their career. 

- The Garnet defense withstood a few late flurries from the Green Terror attack. Aird added another save in the 82nd minute and cut off a few crossing passes as the Swarthmore defense held strong in front of its senior keeper.

- Aird stepped up and made one final outstanding save in the 88th minute. After McDaniel's initial shot was blocked by a defender, the Garnet keeper preserved a draw with an excellent diving stop after a dangerous second-chance attempt from inside the box. The Green Terror had one final push in the dwindling seconds of regulation, but were turned away by Swarthmore's stellar defensive backs.
