WESTMINSTER, MD - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team fell to McDaniel College, 57-47, on Saturday afternoon.
Catherine Chadwell had another strong game, pacing her squad with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting. The rookie has scored double-figures in eight straight while averaging 13.8 points this season. Vianna Kanyamiheto-Watson also scored in double figures with 11 points.
Swarthmore outscored the Green Terror in the second half, but were unable to overcome a slow start.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Chadwell scored the opening three points of the contest, McDaniel took control with an 11-0 run. Swarthmore salvaged the quarter with a
Lily Czub bucket and a Kanyamiheto-Watson three in the final two minutes, but trailed 13-9 at the first intermission.
- McDaniel got off to another fast start to begin the second quarter, opening the stanza on a 10-2 swing. Kanyamiheto-Watson would get the Garnet back on track with a three-pointer at the 5:08 mark, while Chadwell added a three-point play towards the end of the stanza. However, the Garnet were outscored 22-13 in a lopsided quarter as they entered halftime trailing by 13 points.
- Midway through the third quarter, Kanyamiheto-Watson connected on a three-point play to spark positive momentum for the Garnet. However, the Green Terror maintained their double-digit edge as they headed into the final stanza with a 46-32 lead.
- Early in the fourth, Swarthmore strung together seven-straight points to make a run. Claire Mathews opened the rally with a triple, while Kanyamiheto-Watson and Carly Murphy added jumpers to pull within nine points. McDaniel would settle things down with consecutive three-pointers, but the Garnet controlled the quarter with a 15-11 edge.
