Men’s Basketball Overtakes Muhlenberg in Overtime

SWARTHMORE, Pa.  - The Swarthmore College men's basketball team continued to roll through conference play with a 74-73 overtime victory over Muhlenberg College on Wednesday evening. The Garnet improved to 2-0 to open its Centennial Conference slate.

Swarthmore outscored Muhlenberg by four points in the second half before edging out its opponent in overtime. Both teams remained within an arm's length of each other throughout the contest, combining for 13 lead changes and six ties. The Mules had the largest lead of the evening with a 12-point advantage, while the Garnet never led by more than four points.

Three players enjoyed double figures to lead the Garnet in a gritty team effort. Eddie Paquette led the trio with 13 points and 11 rebounds, notching his second double-double of the season, while Cal Hanson and Devin Burger added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After the Mules jumped out to a 6-2 lead, Jonathan Stump got the Garnet going with five-straight points. The junior nailed a three-pointer before adding a baby hook inside the paint.

- Swarthmore tallied back-to-back threes from Paquette and Caleb Aurelien to take a two-point advantage. However, the Mules countered with an 8-0 stretch to take a 21-15 lead with 7:26 left.

- After the Garnet chipped away at their deficit, Muhlenberg built its lead up to nine points with 4:30 left. The Garnet closed the gap with a 6-0 run to end the final two minutes, pulling within four points at the half, 31-27.

- Early in the second, Zander Jimenez hit from long range to bring the team within a bucket. Ryan Chu would eventually even the score with a jumper, followed by a corner three to score five-unanswered points.

- Midway through the half, Hanson gave the Garnet the lead with a three-pointer. However, the Mules took control of the game with an 11-0 stretch to build a double-digit lead. The visitors found themselves leading by as many as 12 points with 8:35 left.

- With their backs against the wall, the Garnet flipped the game around with a 15-0 stretch to steal momentum. Hanson kickstarted the rally with a jumper and a three-pointer, while Nyle Coleman and Aurelien added triples during the game-changing run. The Mules had no answer for the Garnet full-court press, which forced a couple key turnovers during the run. Swarthmore found themselves with a three-point edge at the 4:36 mark.

- Muhlenberg would deliver another punch, connecting on two-straight threes to regain the lead. Swarthmore then found themselves in front after two-straight buckets until the Mules hit a go-ahead three with 1:50 left. Swarthmore earned a couple stops on the defensive end before Burger sent the game to overtime with a hard-earned layup with 23 seconds left.

- In overtime, Swarthmore used a 5-0 run to build a two-possession lead. Hanson opened the stretch with a jumper, while Burger connected from long range to create a four-point cushion with 1:23 left.
