WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Swarthmore College men's basketball team earned its third straight win with a 55-46 triumph at McDaniel College on Saturday. It was the Garnet's 19
th consecutive victory over the Green Terror.
Swarthmore went in front, 26-18, in the opening half after a 13-4 rally and the Garnet did not trail for the rest of the contest. The visitors boasted a balanced attack with 10 players recording points.
Nyle Coleman was the only Swarthmore athlete to reach double figures, finishing with a season-high 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
Eddie Paquette became the 30
th player in program history to register 1,000 career points when he converted a pair of free throws with 2:27 left in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two sides went back and forth for the opening 12 minutes and the Green Terror held a 14-13 edge at the 8:12 mark. Swarthmore then took over with a 13-4 run and went ahead 26-18 with 1:52 left in the period. The Garnet shot 4-of-7 while limiting McDaniel to 1-of-9 during the sequence and five Swarthmore players scored points. The Green Terror bounced back with seven of the last nine to cut the deficit to three (28-25) at halftime.
- Early in the second half, McDaniel was within one (30-29) when the Garnet poured in 11 consecutive points to start an 18-5 surge that gave them a 48-34 advantage with 9:21 to play.
Ryan Chu led the way with six points and Swarthmore drilled five threes to spark the rally. The Garnet also held the Green Terror to just 2-for-10 from the floor.
- McDaniel closed the gap to seven (50-43) with a 9-2 stretch that ended at the 4:47 mark. Swarthmore then closed the game out by limiting the home team to 1-for-6 from the field down the stretch. The Garnet went 5-for-6 at the foul line, including Paquette's milestone free throws, to ice the victory.
