Volleyball Takes Down Rutgers-Camden in Three Sets

SWARTHMORE, PA. - The Swarthmore College volleyball team returned from a week-long hiatus with a 3-0 victory over Rutgers-Camden on Tuesday evening. The victory kicks off a stretch of five home games this week.

The Garnet took care of business with a pair of 25-15 victories, but were pushed to their limit in a wild third set that featured 21 ties and 11 lead changes. Swarthmore ended up avoiding a fourth set with a 35-33 win, despite a remarkable fight from Rutgers-Camden.

Alexia Enache led the way with 11 kills and a .237 hitting percentage. She was the only Garnet player to record double-digit kills. Keira Miles was excellent at the net with a game-high five blocks to go along with six kills and a .462 hitting percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After falling behind 3-1 to open the set, the Garnet responded with an 8-4 swing to take a commanding lead. Enache forced an early Scarlet Raptors timeout with a kill to put Swarthmore ahead 11-5. Following the timeout, the Garnet maintained its hold on the set with a 7-1 run to increase its lead to 11 points. Swarthmore cruised to a 25-15 set victory.

- The Garnet carried momentum into the second stanza, opening with a 9-4 run. Early in the set, Lois Matsukawa helped distance the Garnet with three-straight service aces. Swarthmore later rallied for five-straight points as they ran away with another 25-15 set. Zindzhi Montgomery sealed the victory with a set-clinching kill.

- Rutgers took an 8-7 lead in a much more competitive third set. Midway through the stanza, Zion Vick put the Garnet ahead by three points with a kill, but the Scarlet Raptors refused to go down quietly. Rutgers responded to take a 14-13 lead until Swarthmore countered with five-consecutive points to build a four-point advantage. Rutgers eventually battled back to take a 23-22 edge in a wild finish. However, Swarthmore prevailed with an Enache kill and Miles block to hold off its feisty challenger for a 35-33 victory. The set featured 21 ties and 11 lead changes.
