Volleyball Opens Phoenix Invite with Pair of Wins

SWARTHMORE, PA. - The Swarthmore College volleyball team opened its home Phoenix Invitational with a pair of victories over Misericordia University, 3-1, and Skidmore College, 3-0, on Friday night. The Garnet held off the Cougars after dropping the third set, while cruising to a 3-0 sweep against the Thoroughbreds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Garnet took an early lead with a 4-0 run, which featured an Emily Sun service ace. Swarthmore began to create some distance later in the set with back-to-back Sun aces, prompting a Cougars timeout, 18-11. Misericordia narrowed the gap to shrink its deficit to two points, but could not hold off a late Swarthmore surge. The Garnet clinched the set with three-straight points, which was capped off by a Keira Miles kill, 25-20. 

- After a slow start to the second, Sun, who finished the game with a career-high in aces, got the Garnet back on track with consecutive aces to tie the game at five. The beginning of the match featured 10 ties and six lead changes, before the Garnet took charge after a Melissa Eyer ace gave them a 13-12 lead. The Garnet rattled off five-straight points to take a four-point advantage, but the Cougars clawed back with a 7-2 swing to regain the lead at 19-18. With Misericordia in the driver's seat, Swarthmore rallied to take its lead back with a Zindzhi Montgomery kill, making it 24-23. Moments later, Alexia Enache clinched the set with a tip kill to seal a 26-24 decision. The set ended with 14 ties and eight lead changes. 

- The Cougars opened a must-win third set with a 12-7 advantage to put the Garnet on their heels. The Garnet were unable to regroup after a timeout as Misericordia built its lead to eight points, 20-12. The Cougars then took a match-high 11-point advantage to clinch the third set, 25-14.

- Swarthmore began to put the Cougars away in the fourth set after rallying for four-straight to take a 13-8 lead. Misericordia battled back to tie the game at 18-18, but the Garnet countered with a 5-1 run, which featured a pair of Adam kills. The Garnet went on to claim the match with a 25-21 decision.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Midway through the opening set, the Garnet went on a 6-1 swing to capture momentum with a 13-8 lead. The Garnet kept their opponent at a distance, despite a late 3-0 run from the Thoroughbreds. Swarthmore wrapped up the set with three-straight points, clinching victory with an Enache kill, 25-19. 

- With the second set tied at seven, the Garnet went on the set's first run with five-straight points behind excellent serving from Ellie Streeper. The senior tallied an ace during the run, while Adam totaled three kills, which eventually prompted a Skidmore timeout. Swarthmore kept its foot on the gas, tallying consecutive Eyer aces to build an eight-point advantage. The Thoroughbreds stormed back with a 7-1 run until Swarthmore rallied for consecutive points to end the set, 25-20.

- Both teams were evenly matched in the third set until Streeper rattled off back-to-back aces for her squad's fourth and fifth straight points, taking a 12-8 lead. Swarthmore continued to pile on, rallying for four-straight points to force Skidmore to burn its final timeout, 20-12. Adam added two more kills to her stellar performance, while Madeline Mountcastle pressured the Thoroughbreds with quality serves. Jalyn Miller helped end the set with a pair of kills as Swarthmore clinched with a 25-18 decision.

UP NEXT
The Garnet (5-1) wrap up its second of three home invitationals with Wesleyan University and Susquehanna University on Saturday. The Garnet will celebrate its seniors in its 12:30 p.m. matchup against the Cardinals.
