Field Hockey Blanks Susquehanna In Home Opener

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The No. 22 Swarthmore College field hockey team won its home opener on Saturday, 3-0, against Susquehanna University.

The Garnet scored three times in the first half and made them stand in the second. Amelia Landry, Annika Hoyer, and Liza Semenenko all found the back of the cage for Swarthmore while Hayley Harris notched a pair of assists. Cassandra Conklin stopped two shots to earn her second shutout of the season. The Garnet totaled 19 shots on the day and allowed just three by the River Hawks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore had the only shot of the contest through the first 11 minutes, putting it wide of the cage. The Garnet then struck with a penalty corner at the 11:09 mark. Harris inserted and sent the ball up to Landry, whose shot deflected off a defender and into the back of the goal for a 1-0 Swarthmore lead. Conklin made a save off a Susquehanna penalty corner in the 13th minute to keep the Garnet in front entering the second quarter.

- Swarthmore upped the advantage to two just 23 seconds into the second period. Gabriella Vasquez dribbled down to the left side of the net before centering for a tap-in by Hoyer. The River Hawks nearly cut the deficit in half in the 21st minute but Zoe Larsen kept the ball out with a defensive save. The Garnet then made it 3-0 in the 24th minute, again off a penalty corner inserted by Harris. This time, it was Semenenko who blasted a shot in from up top.

- Swarthmore cruised in the second half, allowing just one Susquehanna shot which was turned aside by Conklin.
