SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The No. 22 Swarthmore College field hockey team battled against No. 14 York College of Pennsylvania but ultimately fell to the Spartans, 3-2, in double overtime on Wednesday night.
After a scoreless first half, all four goals in regulation came during the third quarter. York netted the first tally less than a minute into the period before the Garnet rallied for back-to-back markers to take the lead. However, the Spartans recorded the equalizer with just six seconds to go in the frame. It then took until the second extra session for York to score the game-winner.
Swarthmore had the better of play overall with a 14-10 edge in shots and a 9-4 advantage in penalty corners.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore registered the only two shots of the first quarter. The Garnet nearly went in front just over a minute until the second period but the Spartans came up with a defensive save. Swarthmore totaled seven shots in the first 30 minutes but did not get on the board as the York goalkeeper tallied three saves. The Spartans generated just one shot in the opening half and Conklin made the stop.
- York broke through for the first goal of the evening just 39 seconds into the third quarter, scoring off a penalty corner. The Garnet answered in the 35
th minute as
Emma Duffield found Vasquez with a pass into the scoring area and the junior put the ball past the keeper to tie it up at one.
- Swarthmore went in front less than four minutes later. On a penalty corner,
Erin Coyle sent the ball towards the cage and Landry tipped it in for her team-leading third goal of the season. However, the Spartans brought things level again late in the third. York pressured the Garnet in the final three minutes and it resulted in the tying goal, once more off a penalty corner, with just six seconds left on the clock.
- The Spartans produced the only two shots in the fourth quarter and Conklin stopped both to send the game to overtime. York made three saves and Conklin registered one in the first extra session to take the contest to a second 10-minute period. The Spartans put in the game-winner just 39 seconds into the second overtime stanza. On a penalty corner, Conklin came up with the initial save but a York player was on the doorstep to put in the rebound.
